Creating value for brands, retailers, and consumers enriches my growth: Swarnim Saxena, Head – Modern Trade, Orion India

Must Read

What inspired you to pursue a career in the food and grocery sector?

Funnily enough, as a kid I was very much into grocery shopping. Growing up, I even tried getting a job at the local kirana store. The love for food and groceries with an active interest in consumer behaviour led me to a summer internship in Varun Beverages and I have loved being in the industry ever since.

What part of your job brings you the greatest fulfillment?

The greatest fulfillment in my job comes from crafting winning propositions that benefit the brand, the retailer, and the consumer through compelling products. Additionally, the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of individuals—from channel partners and retail associates to consumers—provides a rich, multifaceted perspective on life and business. This blend of strategic impact and broad exposure deeply enriches my professional and personal growth.

Any role model who has influenced you?

While I have had mentors during each period of my life, I give a lot of credit to Sreejit Nair (CEO- Costa Coffee) and Hakimuddin Bootwala (CSO- Wingreens World) for their influence on my career. I feel I have learnt the ABCs of key account management and leadership from them. Right from seeking the best possible outcomes in a negotiation to developing consumer love for a brand – they are my north stars.

What personal qualities or skills are essential for thriving in this industry?

I believe a mix of Analytics and Empathy are important. Looking beyond the data and inferencing the underlying principles are the key to success.

Any memorable experience or achievement in your career that you’re proud of?

One such achievement was presenting the Reliance Retail-Wingreens success story at the Golden Spoon Awards ‘22, alongside Zubin sahab, to DM sir and Anju ma’am. Our collaborative effort with RRL to design a new price-pack architecture drove a 3X increase in category size and a 6 basis point rise in customer penetration within a year.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role?

I draw inspiration from people who have endured and negotiated far tougher situations. Might seem odd but I think about the physical ordeal borne by our freedom fighters and our soldiers. That really helps me give perspective.

What’s the one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I love boxing. I indulge in the sport at least three to four times a week.

What methods do you use to stay current with the latest developments and innovations in your field?

I read trade magazines of which Progressive Grocer is my favourite.

Any learnings that you would like to share?

Wisdom is everywhere; the key is knowing who to listen to.
