For those in the hospitality industry, attending the Hospitality Purchasing Managers’ Forum (HPMF) Convention is akin to stepping into a thrilling chapter of their own story—a tale of connections, learning, and inspiration that unfolds each year. As the event approaches, excitement ripples through the industry like a summer breeze, carrying whispers of what’s to come.

This year, with the convention happening after a hiatus of 4 years due to the Covid pandemic and its aftereffects, anticipation reached a fever pitch, with participants counting down the days like children awaiting their favorite holiday.

As dawn broke on September 26th, over 525 delegates, partners, media and well known personalities from the hospitality industry, and from different parts of the country, embarked on an adventure that promised not just knowledge but a tapestry of experiences woven with connection and camaraderie.

In Lucknow, the morning shimmered like the vibrant colors of a festival just beginning. The sun cast a golden hue over the Ramada by Wyndham, the largest banquet and convention venue in Uttar Pradesh, where an exhilarating event was about to unfold.

Day 1: A Festive Welcome in the True Spirit of Hospitality

The atmosphere was nothing short of festive as delegates, sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, guests, and media personalities streamed into the grand hotel, their faces alight with excitement. A troupe of performers burst on the scene, adorned in dazzling costumes with peacock feathers. They danced with grace and exuberance, their rhythmic movements telling tales of tradition and culture. Guests paused, their eyes drawn to the lively spectacle, smiles spreading across their faces.

Amidst the swirling colors and joyful energy, delegates exchanged greetings, forging connections that would enrich their professional journeys.  Conversations bubbled like champagne, each interaction a spark igniting new ideas and connections. This was just the beginning of a remarkable journey, where stories would be shared, friendships forged, and memories created that would last well beyond the confines of the event.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, a vibrant energy pulsated in the hotel’s foyer. The HPMF volunteers, embodying the spirit of hospitality, greeted a wave of guests arriving from every corner of the country. Each visitor was adorned with a garland, a symbol of welcome, while the gentle flicker of aarti wrapped everyone in a blanket of tradition and hospitality.

Inside the hotel lobby, the atmosphere was alive with laughter and chatter, where the aroma of freshly brewed chai mingled with the sweet scent of sherbet. A dedicated team of HPMF volunteers expertly managed the registration, handing out event badges with a flourish and presenting welcome bags that held a vibrant orange T-shirt emblazoned with the silhouette of Lord Rama poised with his bow and arrow, alongside a beautifully crafted Lucknowi Chikankari kurta that spoke of artistry and tradition.

As I collected my room key from the reception, the excitement of the day filled me with anticipation. I glanced at the HPMF itinerary and checked the mention of the trip to Ayodhya scheduled for 2:00 PM. It felt like a promise of something profound, a journey not just of miles but of spirit.

The clock ticked closer to noon, the anticipation of the afternoon’s journey to Ayodhya hung in the air, a thrilling adventure that would deepen our connections not just with each other, but with the very essence of our shared heritage.

Uniting in Devotion on the Way to Ayodhya

As the minutes slipped away like grains of sand, the energy in the lobby of the Ramada Hotel continued to swell, a living pulse of excitement and camaraderie. The last guests trickled in, each welcomed with the same warmth and joy that had defined the day.

Outside, about a dozen tourist buses awaited, ready to whisk the HPMF entourage to sacred grounds. Guests, adorned in orange T-shirts featuring Lord Ram, gathered in groups, their spirits high and smiles wide. Together, they formed a sea of color, reminiscent of a vibrant pilgrimage setting forth on a sacred adventure.

Half an hour after taking their seats, the colorful mosaic of men and women set out towards Ayodhya, approximately 135 kilometers from Lucknow. As the buses rolled away from the hotel, the excitement in the air was palpable as the buses glided along NH 27, weaving through a picturesque landscape that unfolded like a beautifully painted canvas.

The drive was a delightful experience. Lush landscapes flew by, framed by golden fields and cloud-speckled skies, with trees swaying gently in the breeze, their leaves shimmering under the playful dance of sunlight and clouds. Every now and then, the skies would open up, sprinkling the world with a refreshing drizzle, only to retreat and allow the sun to break through once more. It was as if nature itself was joining in the celebration, setting the perfect backdrop for the journey ahead.

As the convoy rolled on, lunch boxes filled with delicious local delicacies and water bottles were distributed, fueling the group with nourishment and joy. Laughter echoed through the buses, conversations bubbled over, and stories of hospitality adventures flowed freely, each one weaving deeper connections among the attendees.

With about 45 minutes left to reach Ayodhya, the excitement reached a crescendo. The HPMF team, ever mindful of their travelers’ needs, decided it was time for a brief respite. The buses pulled over at a charming roadside stop –Yadav Hotel –where the scent of freshly brewed tea wafted through the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of rain-kissed soil.

Stepping off the bus, everyone stretched and took a moment to breathe in the fresh, invigorating air. The hotel itself was abuzz with activity with chatter, laughter, and the mouthwatering aromas of freshly brewed chai and golden-brown samosas wafting about. We tucked into the crispy samosas and pakodas but it was the sweet treats –  Rasmalai and Rabri – that stole the show and were the undeniable stars of the menu.

After half an hour of laughter and shared meals, we gathered once more, the spirit of the group revitalized. The excitement had shifted into overdrive, especially for those visiting Ayodhya for the first time. For many, this journey was not just about distance but a pilgrimage to a place woven into the very fabric of their beliefs.

As we resumed our journey towards Ayodhya, the anticipation felt almost electric. With every passing moment, our excitement mounted, each heartbeat echoing with the promise of something extraordinary just around the bend. This was more than a journey; it was a chance to witness a dream brought to life—a moment that would forever be etched in our hearts and would carry us through the days ahead.

The Pilgrimage to Lord Ramlala

As we neared Ayodhya, our sense of purpose deepened. This wasn’t just a trip; it was a pilgrimage into heritage and spirituality. The vibrant orange shirts and joyful chants created a powerful moment of connection, reminding us that we were part of something greater.

As dusk fell, we entered Ayodhya, the air alive with chants of “Jai Sri Ram.” With hands folded in prayer, we stepped off the buses, hearts racing with reverence. Our procession formed orderly lines toward the grand gateway to Ram Path, each step echoing history and devotion.

I watched fellow travelers, many prepared for this spiritual journey. A group clapped cymbals, their rhythmic melody filling the air. At the temple gates, we stood awestruck before the breathtaking architecture, each intricate carving whispering stories of faith. Despite ongoing construction, the atmosphere buzzed with reverence, our collective sigh a testament to the beauty surrounding us. The energy of the crowd was infectious, drawing us into a chorus of devotion that infused the air with excitement and purpose.

As we approached the sanctum, anticipation thrummed through us, each heartbeat synchronized with fervent prayers. The atmosphere shimmered with reverence, and as we drew closer, we were transfixed, breaths held in awe.

Before us stood the statue of Lord Ramlala, radiant in divine glory. Every detail pulsed with life; the rich colors and serene expression grounded us in the present while connecting us to the timeless. A profound silence enveloped the space, honoring this sacred encounter—a fulfillment of a lifelong spiritual dream.

In that moment, we weren’t just witnesses; we were part of a tapestry woven from threads of devotion across time. Tears welled in our eyes, a release of emotion shared among us, feeling as though Lord Ramlala embraced each of us in His light. This wasn’t just a moment; it was a sacred gift to carry forever.

Crafted from ancient black granite, the statue stands at 51 inches, symbolizing innocence in Hindu scriptures. Its dark hue absorbed light, radiating warmth and peace, bridging earthly and celestial realms. Adorned with dazzling jewels, it shimmered like a starry night, reflecting the grace and nobility of Lord Ram.

Caught in the moment, we stood in awe, reluctant to leave His presence. But as volunteers urged us onward, bittersweet longing washed over us. Each step took us further from that extraordinary sight, yet His essence lingered—a soft whisper of peace and love.

As we moved on, we carried His blessings with us, that moment etched in our hearts as a guiding light illuminating our paths. Stepping into the world beyond the temple, we held His warmth—a flame that would never dim.

A Night of Cultural Bliss in Ayodhya

With the lifetime milestone of Lord Ramlala’s darshan accomplished, the next highlight on the HPMF itinerary for the day awaited us—a live cultural concert that promised to be a feast for the senses. We made our way to Ram Katha Park, a serene oasis nestled in the heart of the city, where lush lawns unfurled like green carpets beneath our feet.

The park, with its open-air theatres and carefully manicured gardens, is a cherished venue for devotional programs and cultural performances, a place where the spirit of Ayodhya comes alive. As we settled into our chairs on the sprawling lawns of Ram Katha Park, the stage came to life as artists took their places. The performers, clad in traditional attire, poured their hearts into each song, their voices rising and falling like waves on a tranquil sea. Devotional songs intertwined with popular hymns created a tapestry of sound that wrapped around us, inviting us to lose ourselves in the rhythm of devotion.

But the evening was far from over. A stunning laser show illuminated the night sky, casting vibrant beams of light that danced like spirits above us. The display narrated the grand saga of Lord Rama’s life, with breathtaking visuals that painted tales of valor, love, and devotion across the canvas of the night. In that moment, we were not just spectators; we were part of a living epic, celebrating the legacy of Lord Rama under a starlit sky, united in our devotion and joy. It was an evening that would linger in our memories, a cherished chapter in the beautiful story of our pilgrimage to Ayodhya.

But midway through this enchanting evening, the heavens opened up, and light showers began to fall like blessings from above. At first, it was a gentle sprinkle, the kind that felt refreshing against our skin, adding a magical touch to the ambiance. Many guests smiled, their spirits undeterred, as they reveled in the rhythm of the rain mingling with the music.

As the performance continued, however, the drizzle transformed into a steady downpour, gaining momentum and intensity, as if the sky itself had decided to join the festivities. The HPMF team, ever attentive, quickly urged everyone to partake in the dinner prepared for the evening. The culinary offerings were a celebration of local Awadhi flavors, a feast with rich aromas and exquisite tastes.

By the time we began our dinner, the rain was pouring down in sharp bursts and yet, the spirit of camaraderie remained unbroken. Laughter echoed through the raindrops as we savored delectable dishes that spoke of the region’s culinary heritage. It was a moment of warmth and connection, the perfect antidote to the sudden downpour.

As the final notes of the performances faded into the night, the rain continued to play its unpredictable game, prompting many of us to make the decision to return to our buses, parked a distance away. Armed with umbrellas and laughter, we braved the weather, our spirits undampened by the unforeseen showers.

Around midnight, we finally departed from Ayodhya, still in high spirits, sharing stories and smiles, our hearts buoyed by the evening’s experiences, despite the disruptions. It was a testament to the resilience of the HPMF community, a reminder that even when the skies open up unexpectedly, the light of devotion and fellowship shines brighter than any storm.

Day 2: Insights, Celebrations, Reflections

As the sun rose on the second day of the HPMF convention, the air buzzed with anticipation, much like the first sip of coffee on a brisk morning. Delegates, vendors, and hospitality professionals gathered in the sprawling conference hall, their faces a mix of eagerness and determination.

The day promised a wealth of knowledge and connection, with a packed schedule that included conferences, exhibition, panel discussions, B2B networking sessions, and a vibrant gala night by the serene banks of the Gomti River.

The morning sessions kicked off with a series of engaging talks, but one particular highlight stood out: a fireside chat moderated by Jaideep Gupta, a celebrated restaurant consultant and a member of the HPMF advisory board. Jaideep’s discussion centered around a pivotal theme in the hospitality industry: the intricate relationship between vendors and purchasing managers in hotels. This relationship, he explained, was one of interdependability—where both parties relied on each other to thrive.

As the conversation flowed, Jaideep emphasized the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by purchasing managers. “It’s not just about selling a product,” he stated, leaning forward with passion. “It’s about forging relationships built on trust, transparency, and a shared vision.” He painted a vivid picture of the procurement landscape, where the needs of hotels were ever-evolving and complex, necessitating a thoughtful approach from vendors.

The audience was captivated as he shared anecdotes from his years in the industry, illustrating how successful vendors had mastered the art of empathy, listening closely to the pain points of their partners. The dialogue transformed into a lively exchange, with attendees sharing their experiences and insights.

“Creating a harmonious synergy of supply and demand isn’t merely a strategy; it’s an art form,” Jaideep remarked, his voice rich with conviction. He encouraged the audience to view each interaction as an opportunity to build a connection rather than just a transaction. With every thoughtful question posed, the discussion deepened, revealing the nuances of negotiation, the importance of sustainability, and the role of innovation in the hospitality supply chain.

The outcome from the fireside chat was that both vendors and hospitality professionals must prioritize collaboration, transparency, and mutual understanding to build successful business relationships. Vendors should focus on delivering value through quality products, strong support, and sustainability, while purchasing managers should advocate for what best serves their organizations’ interests.

As the morning sessions concluded, the delegates broke into smaller groups, their conversations bubbling with new ideas and collaborative spirit. The atmosphere was alive with potential, each individual carrying the momentum of the discussions into the afternoon’s business networking session.

The Riverfront Park awaited, promising an evening of entertainment by the side of Gomti River. As guests gathered for the gala night, laughter and music mingled in the air, transforming the park into a vibrant celebration of hospitality.

As the party progressed, it was clear: the second day of the HPMF convention had not just been about learning; it was a celebration of community, a reminder that in the world of hospitality, success is woven together through the bonds of collaboration and mutual respect. Each participant left the park that night not just as professionals, but as part of a thriving family, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow together.

Day 3: Honoring Achievements in Hospitality

As dawn broke on the third and final day of the HPMF convention, an electric atmosphere filled the air, vibrant with the promise of insights yet to be uncovered. The morning kicked off with a series of compelling panel discussions, where industry luminaries took the stage to delve into the pressing topics shaping the hospitality landscape. Motivational talks sparked enthusiasm, igniting fires of ambition within the audience. Each speaker contributed invaluable insights that resonated deeply, painting a comprehensive picture of the industry’s future.

Outside the conference room, the vendor stalls and their exhibits were hubs of activity.  Each stall was meticulously curated, showcasing the latest products, services, and cutting-edge technologies poised to revolutionize the HORECA (Hotel, Restaurant, and Catering) industry. Attendees navigated the stalls, their curiosity piqued by innovations that promised to elevate their operations and guest experiences.

After an energizing lunch, it was time for business networking—a key highlight of the convention. Vendors and suppliers set up their tables, transforming the hall into a vibrant marketplace of ideas and opportunities. This year, the convention marked a remarkable achievement, with over a hundred successful deals sealed and several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) inked, collectively valued at an astounding INR 1200 crore.

The evening promised a celebration unlike any other. The grand night of entertainment unfolded, culminating in the prestigious HPMF Procurement Excellence Awards. This year’s awards recognized outstanding contributions to the industry through a rigorous, merit-based selection process. Notable accolades included the Thakur Giriraj Singh Ji Lotwara Memorial Award, awarded to the esteemed Padmashree Dr. Rajnikant, and the HPMF Lifetime Achievement Award presented to the distinguished Mr. N. Srinivasan. With a heartfelt focus on Women Achievers of India, the evening shone a light on the remarkable contributions of women, celebrating their unwavering spirit and dedication to the hospitality sector.

As the applause echoed through the venue, the camaraderie among attendees reached new heights. The connections forged over the past days transformed into a tapestry of shared dreams and aspirations, weaving together stories that would be told long after the convention had ended.

What HPMF Left Behind

The following morning, as the attendees prepared to depart, a wave of reflection swept over them. They were not merely leaving with memories; they carried with them a wealth of inspiration, fresh ideas, and invigorated spirits. Each individual felt transformed, emboldened by the collective experiences that had unfolded over the convention, which provided delegates, sponsors, professionals, partners, and awardees with a profound sense of belonging and achievement.

With every handshake, every shared laugh, and every insightful conversation, a new chapter in the ongoing narrative of hospitality was written. As they returned to their respective corners of the industry, the anticipation for the next HPMF convention began to brew, a promise of new adventures, deeper connections, and unforgettable moments waiting to be discovered.

In the ever-evolving story of hospitality, each year presents a blank canvas, ready to be painted with the vibrant colors of collaboration and innovation.
