Flipkart, an e-commerce platform owned by the US retail chain Walmart, is reportedly planning to enter the food and beverages (F&B) category through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) channel. This means users may soon be able to order from a wide range of restaurants and fast food outlets via the Flipkart app.
This new service could make Flipkart’s F&B-ordering business more cost-effective, as the company would not need to deploy a fleet of food delivery executives or persuade restaurants to sell directly on Flipkart.
Additionally, it was reported that the government had previously asked e-commerce players Amazon and Flipkart to set up ONDC storefronts on their home pages. This initiative aims to help the network scale up operations, facilitate deliveries, and address any issues or delays
Established in December 2021, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a private, non-profit company created by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Government of India. ONDC aims to foster open interchange and connections between shoppers, technology platforms, and retailers, with the mission of creating an inclusive e-commerce ecosystem.
